Starting January 2025, all Emirati citizens planning to marry will be required to undergo genetic testing as part of their premarital screenings. This new rule, led by the Emirates Genome Council, marks a significant step in the UAE’s efforts to enhance public health and improve the quality of life for its people.
While medical tests for marriage have long been mandatory, genetic screenings were previously voluntary. The aim of the new policy is to identify genetic disorders early, including over 570 hereditary conditions like cardiomyopathy, genetic epilepsy, spinal muscular atrophy, hearing loss, and cystic fibrosis.
This move supports the UAE Centennial Vision 2071, which seeks to drive sustainable development and integrate cutting-edge medical technologies into healthcare. The genetic testing initiative will create a national database that allows for early detection and intervention, ensuring healthier generations ahead.
The Ministry of Health and Prevention has confirmed that all the necessary resources, trained staff, and technical infrastructure are in place to roll out the program, which promises to be a game-changer in the country’s healthcare system.
