Carney Protégé Poised to Succeed Hillman as Canada’s U.S. Ambassador

Hillman to Step Down

Canada’s ambassador to the United States, Kirsten Hillman, announced Tuesday that she will leave her post in early 2026. Hillman has served as Canada’s top envoy in Washington, D.C., since 2020.

Potential Successor

Sources close to the government indicate that Mark Wiseman, a 55-year-old financier and close associate of Prime Minister Mark Carney, is being considered to replace Hillman. The Prime Minister’s Office has not officially confirmed the appointment. Bloomberg News also reported that Wiseman is expected to become the next ambassador, citing individuals familiar with the matter.

Neither Hillman nor Wiseman was immediately available for comment.

Hillman’s Role in Trade Negotiations

During her tenure, Hillman has played a key role in managing complex and sometimes tense trade negotiations with the Trump administration. She has helped guide discussions for a refreshed trade agreement between Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

Timing of Departure

A source close to Hillman said she had planned to resign in mid-2026 but decided, with Carney, that an earlier departure would be beneficial. Leaving in January or February would allow a new ambassador sufficient time to prepare for the upcoming trade negotiations, which could intensify by July.

Hillman’s Statement

In her farewell statement posted on X, Hillman expressed gratitude for her experience and leadership support from Prime Minister Carney. She wrote, “Most recently, as the Canada-U.S. relationship is being rewritten, I have been deeply grateful for Prime Minister Carney’s strong leadership and for the confidence that he has placed in me.”
