Students Rally Against Merz During University Visit

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz Faces Student Protests During University of Cologne Visit

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was greeted by large-scale student demonstrations on Monday during his visit to the University of Cologne, where protesters criticized his government’s priorities on defense spending, education, and social welfare.

Security was significantly strengthened across the campus as police established controlled entry points and secured the area surrounding the venue where Merz attended the inauguration of the new Adenauer School of Government.

According to local reports, around 1,000 students participated in the demonstration, carrying banners with messages such as “Tax the Rich,” “Private Capital Out of the University,” and other slogans expressing dissatisfaction with the chancellor’s policies. Some demonstrators also waved Palestinian flags and voiced support for the Palestinian cause while criticizing Germany’s position on the conflict.

The protest was organized by the University of Cologne’s student union (AStA), which argued that the newly established institute—supported by a private foundation—could increase private sector influence over public higher education.

Student representatives also accused the Merz administration of allocating substantial resources to defense while reducing funding for social welfare and education. Protesters said government spending should instead prioritize affordable education, student support, and public services.

Despite the demonstrations, the official ceremony proceeded under heightened security, with police maintaining a strong presence to ensure order throughout the event.

The protests reflect growing public debate in Germany over government spending priorities, particularly as increased defense investment coincides with concerns about funding for education and social programs.
