Trump Unveils ‘Iranian Blockade’ Plan, Proposes 20% Cargo Fee for Strait of Hormuz Security
US President Donald Trump announced Monday that his administration would reinstate what he described as an “Iranian blockade” and introduce a 20% fee on cargo transported through the Strait of Hormuz, saying the measure would fund US efforts to safeguard one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump declared that the Strait of Hormuz would remain open regardless of Iran’s actions, emphasizing Washington’s commitment to maintaining freedom of navigation in the strategic waterway.
Trump said the renewed policy would specifically target Iranian vessels and their commercial customers, while allowing ships from other countries to continue using the strait without disruption.
According to the US president, the United States would assume responsibility for securing the waterway and ensuring the safe passage of international shipping through the region.
To cover the operational costs of these security efforts, Trump proposed a 20% charge on all cargo transported through the Strait of Hormuz. He argued that shipping operators benefiting from US protection should contribute financially to maintaining safety in the volatile maritime corridor.
Trump also stated that the United States would adopt the title “Guardian of the Hormuz Strait,” reflecting its expanded role in protecting one of the world’s busiest energy and trade routes.
He added that the policy would take effect immediately, although no further details were provided regarding its implementation or enforcement.
The announcement comes amid heightened regional tensions in the Middle East, where the Strait of Hormuz remains a vital gateway for global oil exports and international maritime commerce.
