UN Envoy Warns of Escalation as Tensions Mount Over Yemen’s Airspace
The United Nations’ Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, has expressed growing concern over rising tensions surrounding Yemen’s airspace and airports, warning that the situation could trigger a broader escalation if restraint is not exercised.
In a statement issued on Monday, Grundberg said he is closely monitoring the latest developments and emphasized the urgent need for all parties to avoid actions that could reignite widespread violence in the war-torn country.
The UN envoy revealed that his office has maintained communication with military representatives from the conflicting sides, urging them to reduce tensions and prevent further deterioration of the security situation.
Grundberg stressed that all stakeholders should refrain from steps that could fuel another cycle of conflict, emphasizing that preserving stability remains a top priority.
He also renewed the United Nations’ call for dialogue under its mediation, encouraging all parties to engage in negotiations aimed at safeguarding the relative calm Yemen has experienced since 2022 and advancing efforts toward a lasting political settlement.
The appeal comes after Yemen’s Defense Ministry announced that government forces targeted the runway of Sana’a International Airport. Officials said the strike was carried out after Houthi authorities allegedly prevented government-authorized flights from landing while permitting an Iranian aircraft to enter Yemeni airspace, which the government described as a violation of national sovereignty.
The incident prompted a strong response from the Houthis, with military spokesperson Yahya Saree warning that the attack would not go unanswered and pledging retaliation.
The latest developments have heightened concerns that renewed military confrontations could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts and further complicate Yemen’s prolonged conflict.
