Pakistan, Canada Align on US-Iran Talks, Push for Lasting Ceasefire

ISTANBUL (April 13, 2026)Shehbaz Sharif and Mark Carney held discussions on Monday focusing on the ongoing dialogue between the United States and Iran, emphasizing the need for sustained peace efforts.

Sharif termed the recent negotiations a “significant step toward peace,” reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to encouraging both Washington and Tehran to uphold the ceasefire and move toward meaningful de-escalation for regional stability.

Carney, in response, commended Pakistan’s diplomatic role in helping facilitate the temporary truce and bringing both sides to the negotiating table.

Beyond geopolitics, the two leaders also explored avenues to strengthen bilateral relations. They agreed to expand cooperation across key sectors including agriculture, clean energy, mining, and investment. Sharif extended an invitation to Carney to visit Pakistan, with both sides pledging continued coordination.

The developments come after Washington and Tehran agreed to a two-week ceasefire last week and engaged in rare direct talks in Islamabad. However, negotiations aimed at ending the conflict that erupted on February 28 concluded early Sunday without a final agreement.
