Panama has officially become an associate member of Mercosur, the South American trade bloc, following a formal ceremony on Saturday in Montevideo, Uruguay. Leaders from Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay were present at the event.
Panama’s President, Jose Raul Mulino, celebrated the milestone, highlighting the country’s distinction as the first Central American nation to join Mercosur. “This is a historic moment,” Mulino remarked. “It represents not just an agreement, but a promise of new opportunities for our people.”
While associate membership grants Panama certain benefits, it does not include voting rights or participation in the bloc’s decision-making processes.
