Thousands of people took to the streets in France and Italy on Saturday to protest violence against women, two days ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The protests, aimed at raising awareness of sexual, physical, psychological, and economic violence, were held in several cities including Paris, Marseille, and Rome. Activists in Rome demonstrated partially nude, inspired by Iranian protestor Ahoo Daryaei. The United Nations’ designated day on November 25 seeks to spotlight the hidden nature of this violence, which remains underreported due to stigma and impunity. Globally, one in three women experiences physical or sexual violence, and 51,100 women were killed by intimate partners or family members in 2023.
