Russia Voices Support for Venezuela After US Military Action
ISTANBUL:
Russia on Tuesday expressed firm support for Venezuela’s government and people, stressing the country’s right to protect its sovereignty and decide its future without foreign interference. Moscow also called for calm and dialogue following a reported US military operation in Caracas.
In an official statement, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said it stands with Venezuela as it works to safeguard national interests and maintain political stability. The ministry underlined that no external power has the right to dictate Venezuela’s political direction.
Support for Interim Leadership
The Russian government welcomed the swearing-in of Delcy Rodríguez as Venezuela’s interim president. According to Moscow, Rodríguez took office in line with a ruling by the Constitutional Chamber of Venezuela’s Supreme Court, giving the move legal backing.
Russian officials said this step reflects the Bolivarian government’s resolve to preserve unity and uphold the existing power structure under national law. They added that the decision aims to prevent a constitutional crisis and ensure conditions for long-term peace and stability.
Moreover, the Foreign Ministry accused foreign actors of making “neocolonial threats” and engaging in armed aggression, warning that such actions risk destabilising the region.
Call for De-escalation
Russia reaffirmed its “unwavering solidarity” with Venezuela and said it remains ready to provide support to what it described as a friendly nation. At the same time, Moscow urged all parties to reduce tensions and avoid further escalation.
The ministry stressed that unresolved issues should be addressed through constructive dialogue in accordance with international law and the UN Charter. It also reiterated that Latin America and the Caribbean should remain a zone of peace.
Background to the Crisis
The statement followed remarks by Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil Pinto, who accused the United States of carrying out strikes on both civilian and military targets in Caracas. He described the action as military aggression and announced a state of emergency.
According to Russia, the latest developments highlight the urgent need for restraint and diplomatic engagement to protect the sovereign development of countries across the region.
