Russia Condemns Deadly Attack Near Church in Jordan

ISTANBUL — October 24, 2026

Russia has strongly denounced a deadly attack near a church in Jordan’s southern Karak governorate that claimed at least nine lives, describing the incident as a deliberate terrorist act aimed at disrupting religious harmony.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said attacks targeting religious sites and the people visiting them were unacceptable. Moscow also expressed solidarity with Jordan in its efforts to combat terrorism and extremism in all forms.

The ministry condemned the violence, warning that the attack appeared intended to undermine the peaceful coexistence and interfaith harmony that have developed within Jordanian society. It also extended its condolences to Jordan’s leadership, the country’s people and the families and friends of those killed.

According to Jordan’s Public Security Directorate, unidentified gunmen opened fire near Hamoud Church on Friday. Security forces subsequently launched efforts to track down and apprehend those responsible for the shooting.

Following the incident, Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan announced three days of national mourning beginning Friday, October 23, in honour of the victims.

The attack has prompted renewed concerns about the security of religious sites and the need to protect peaceful coexistence among different communities. Russia’s statement reaffirmed its support for Jordan’s efforts to confront terrorism and preserve stability.
