Southeast Asia’s Cities Rank Among World’s Most Polluted

Southeast Asia is home to some of the world’s most polluted cities, according to recent air quality rankings. Cities across the region have earned top spots on the global pollution list, with air quality levels regularly surpassing safety thresholds, impacting residents’ health and daily life.

The rankings reveal alarming levels of particulate matter and toxic emissions, caused by rapid urbanization, industrial activities, and vehicular congestion. These pollutants have become a persistent challenge, contributing to respiratory diseases and other health issues among millions of people.

Cities like Jakarta, Manila, and Hanoi consistently rank near the top of global pollution charts, with smog blanketing urban areas for days at a time. Experts point to a combination of factors, including unregulated emissions and limited green spaces, as key contributors to the crisis.

Despite efforts to address the issue, such as stricter regulations and green initiatives, air quality in many Southeast Asian cities continues to deteriorate. The high pollution levels are also exacerbated by seasonal agricultural burning and forest fires, which further degrade air quality.

As Southeast Asia grapples with this ongoing environmental issue, the region’s cities are in urgent need of comprehensive solutions, from cleaner energy to more sustainable urban planning. The rankings serve as a wake-up call, urging policymakers to take stronger action to protect public health and the environment.
