Israeli Forces Conduct Raids in Southern Syria, Detain Two Civilians
ISTANBUL — March 24, 2026
Israeli forces carried out two separate raids in Syria’s Quneitra province on Tuesday, detaining two young shepherds in what Syrian officials describe as a continued violation of national sovereignty.
Raids Target Rural Areas
According to Syria’s state news agency SANA, Israeli troops entered the southern countryside of Quneitra and detained two men near the town of Tal al-Darayyat. At the same time, another unit advanced into Ofania in the northern part of the province.
These operations mark the latest in a series of cross-border incursions in the region.
Ongoing Military Activity
The raids followed a similar operation a day earlier. On Monday, Israeli forces entered the village of Al-Samadaniya al-Sharqiya, where they searched several homes.
Despite a January 6 agreement between Syria and Israel to establish a US-supervised communication mechanism, military actions have continued. The arrangement aimed to improve coordination, reduce tensions, and encourage diplomatic engagement.
Continued Tensions in the Region
However, Israeli forces have maintained near-daily operations in southern Syria, particularly in Quneitra and Daraa. These activities include ground incursions, civilian detentions, and the establishment of checkpoints to search and question residents.
In addition, reports indicate damage to agricultural land, raising concerns among local communities.
Historical Context and Strategic Concerns
Israel has controlled much of Syria’s Golan Heights since 1967. Following the removal of former President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, Israel declared the 1974 disengagement agreement void and moved into the buffer zone.
As a result, Syrians argue that these continued actions are undermining stability and slowing efforts to rebuild the country’s economy. They also warn that ongoing tensions could discourage investment and delay recovery.
