US President Donald Trump on Saturday accused Democratic leaders of intimidating Republican officials, financial supporters and party members by allegedly threatening them with impeachment and imprisonment following the Democrats’ midterm election success. He described the reported pressure as “extortion at the highest level.”
In an extensive statement published on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed that Democratic politicians had sent threatening letters to several individuals, including Attorney General Todd Blanche and prominent Republican donors. According to the president, the messages warned recipients of possible impeachment and other forms of punishment.
Trump alleged that Republican supporters were being targeted simply because of their political affiliations rather than any evidence of wrongdoing. He described the alleged campaign as an example of political weaponization and legal persecution.
The president also criticized Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, accusing her of seeking to target young Americans who support Republican principles.
Calling for action against those allegedly responsible, Trump said that the individuals involved in the reported intimidation should face imprisonment. He also urged Republicans to respond quickly and firmly.
Trump further called on the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate the allegations, stating that he was directing the department to examine what he described as potentially criminal activities.
The accusations come amid growing political tensions following the midterm elections, as the balance of power in Congress is expected to influence the direction of Trump’s remaining presidency.
However, Trump did not disclose specific evidence of the alleged threats, provide details of the letters or identify all the individuals who reportedly received them.
In another Truth Social post, the president described the alleged intimidation of Republican donors and party members as unprecedented and illegal.
He urged those affected to immediately report the incidents to the Department of Justice or send the complaints directly to him.
Trump also called on the Senate, the DOJ and the House of Representatives to take action, warning that Republicans should not allow themselves to be pressured into losing future elections or facing further political consequences.
