Trump Envoy Reports Major Progress in Gaza Cease-Fire Talks

Trump Envoy Optimistic About Gaza Cease-Fire Deal

Negotiations in Doha, Qatar, are reportedly yielding significant progress toward a cease-fire in Gaza, according to President-elect Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff. Speaking from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, Witkoff expressed optimism that a breakthrough could be announced before the January 20 inauguration.

“We’re making strides, but discretion is key as talks continue in Doha,” Witkoff said. The discussions focus on a cease-fire, the release of hostages held by Hamas, and the safe return of displaced individuals. Indirect negotiations, mediated by Qatar and Egypt, have also brought an Israeli delegation back to the table.

Families of Israeli hostages are pressuring Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to grant negotiators full authority to finalize a prisoner exchange. Hamas confirmed the renewed talks, emphasizing issues like the withdrawal of Israeli forces and humanitarian measures.

Witkoff plans to travel to Doha to support the talks, crediting Trump’s leadership for driving negotiations. “This is about saving lives. We’re close, and I believe we’ll get there,” he said.

Despite these efforts, Trump warned of dire consequences if hostages remain in captivity by his inauguration. “All hell will break loose in the Middle East,” he said, though he withheld specifics.

The conflict has claimed over 45,800 lives since Israel launched its military campaign following the October 7 Hamas attack. With over 10,300 Palestinians imprisoned by Israel and around 100 Israelis held by Hamas, tensions remain high as the international community urges a resolution.
