Donald Trump is once again eyeing Greenland, reviving his controversial desire for the U.S. to own and control the Arctic territory. The former president has cited national security and global freedom as key motivations behind his renewed interest.
Trump’s remarks came as he announced Ken Howery, PayPal co-founder, as his pick for U.S. ambassador to Denmark. On Truth Social, Trump declared, “For the sake of National Security and global Freedom, Greenland’s ownership by the United States is imperative.” He also praised Howery as the ideal candidate to represent American interests in Denmark.
This isn’t Trump’s first attempt to stake a claim on Greenland. Back in 2019, he floated the idea of purchasing the territory for its rich natural resources and strategic location, sparking widespread backlash. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen firmly rejected the notion, stating, “Greenland is not for sale. It belongs to Greenland.” The diplomatic fallout led Trump to cancel a planned meeting with Danish officials.
Although the idea was shelved during Trump’s presidency and left untouched by Joe Biden’s administration, Trump’s recent comments suggest he’s far from giving up. With Howery’s appointment, Trump appears poised to rekindle his geopolitical ambitions, signaling that Greenland may once again become a focal point if he reclaims the White House.
Whether viewed as visionary or controversial, Trump’s Greenland dreams are back on the map.
