UN Urges Protection of Syria’s Mass Graves and Evidence

UN Calls for Protection of War Crimes Evidence and Mass Graves in Syria

UN Special Envoy Geir Pedersen urged global organizations to safeguard vital evidence of war crimes in Syria, including mass grave sites, to secure justice for victims. Speaking at a UN Security Council session, Pedersen stressed the urgency of protecting transitional justice mechanisms and ensuring the release of those arbitrarily detained.

He highlighted the immense challenges facing Syria after over a decade of devastating conflict, including widespread poverty and the destruction of infrastructure. Pedersen called for comprehensive support—beyond humanitarian aid—to include economic development, reconstruction, and a resolution to sanctions.

Pedersen also emphasized the importance of an inclusive, credible political process in Syria, reiterating the significance of UN Resolution 2254 for a Syrian-led, non-sectarian government. He denounced Israeli airstrikes and settlement expansion in the Golan Heights, calling them violations of Syria’s sovereignty. The UN envoy stressed that true stability in Syria can only be achieved through inclusive peace-building efforts that address the needs of all Syrians.
