On Saturday, the United States initiated the airdropping of humanitarian assistance into the distressed Gaza Strip, following a devastating incident where over 100 Palestinians lost their lives. Witnesses reported that Israeli forces fired upon individuals queuing for food in Gaza City.
As per U.S. Central Command, U.S. Air Force C-130 cargo planes, in collaboration with Jordan’s air force, conducted a two-hour operation to airdrop humanitarian aid into Gaza. The mission saw the delivery of over 38,000 meals along the Gaza coastline, facilitating civilian access to crucial assistance.
“The Pentagon, as per a statement from Central Command, is strategizing for forthcoming airborne aid drops. These parachute-borne packages have been meticulously packed to ensure safe delivery in populated areas.”
President Joe Biden announced on Friday that the United States would commence airdrops, partnering with Jordan and other nations to deliver supplies. The aim is to alleviate the crisis faced by Gaza residents, who have been overwhelmingly displaced due to Israel’s ground offensive against Hamas. This initiative is crucial as residents continue to struggle with limited access to food and essential supplies.
Humanitarian group officials have expressed reservations about the effectiveness of airdrops as a means of aid distribution, considering them a measure of last resort.
“Innocent people have been ensnared in a devastating conflict, unable to provide for their families, as evidenced by their desperate attempts to access aid,” President Biden remarked. “However, we recognize the necessity for further action, and the United States is committed to expanding our efforts.”
Israel has denied that its military caused most of the deaths in Gaza City during the food distribution incident. According to spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, troops fired warning shots in response to large, threatening crowds. The military stated that dozens of Gazans were wounded due to overcrowding and trampling, not gunfire at those seeking aid. Palestinian health officials, however, reported that most of the people treated at Al-Awda Hospital had been shot.
