US Citizen Shamsud-Din Jabbar Named Driver in New Orleans Attack

Texas Man Shamsud-Din Jabbar Identified as Driver in Deadly New Orleans Attack

A horrific attack in New Orleans’ French Quarter on New Year’s Day has left at least 10 dead and 35 injured after a Texas man, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, crashed his pickup truck into a crowd before opening fire on police officers. The FBI is investigating the incident as a potential act of terrorism.

Jabbar, 42, died in a shootout with law enforcement at the scene. An ISIS flag was discovered in his vehicle, and authorities are examining his possible ties to terrorist groups. Weapons and a potential explosive device were found in the truck, and more explosives were later uncovered in the area.

The attack occurred early in the morning near the popular intersection of Canal and Bourbon Streets. Police say Jabbar appeared determined to cause maximum destruction, swerving around barricades before targeting officers in the crowd. Two police officers were injured but are reported to be in stable condition.

New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick described the assailant as “hell-bent on creating carnage,” and City Councilman Oliver Thomas expressed the struggle of understanding such evil acts. Authorities are still piecing together the motive behind the attack, which has shaken the city, particularly in a district known for its vibrant nightlife and large crowds.
