Macron and EU Condemn US Visa Bans

Visa Row Deepens Transatlantic Tech Tensions

Macron and EU Criticise US Visa Bans Amid Growing Censorship Dispute

French President Emmanuel Macron and senior European Union officials have strongly criticised the United States after Washington imposed visa restrictions on several European figures involved in efforts to regulate major American technology companies.

The move has intensified a diplomatic dispute over what European leaders describe as growing pressure from the US against foreign regulation of its tech sector. According to EU officials, five European policymakers and legal experts were targeted because of their role in developing rules aimed at limiting the power of large digital platforms.

EU Accuses Washington of Pressure Tactics

European leaders accused the US of using visa bans as a political tool. They described the action as an attempt at coercion and intimidation, arguing that it undermines democratic decision-making and international cooperation.

Macron said Europe would not be discouraged from enforcing its own digital laws. He stressed that protecting free speech and fair competition remains a sovereign right and warned against linking regulation with censorship claims.

Dispute Over Tech Regulation Deepens

US officials have defended the decision, claiming that some European regulations unfairly target American companies and restrict freedom of expression. However, EU representatives rejected this argument, saying the rules are designed to promote transparency, accountability, and consumer protection.

The dispute comes as the EU continues to implement strict digital laws aimed at curbing monopolistic practices and misinformation on online platforms. Brussels insists these measures apply equally to all companies, regardless of nationality.

Calls for Dialogue Grow

Despite the sharp exchange, European leaders called for renewed dialogue to prevent further escalation. They emphasised the importance of maintaining strong transatlantic relations while defending Europe’s regulatory independence.

The row highlights rising tensions between allies as governments worldwide struggle to balance digital freedom with tighter oversight of powerful technology firms.
