China has achieved a major engineering feat by completing the world’s longest tunnel, the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel, which stretches 22.1 kilometers (13.7 miles) through the rugged Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang. The tunnel is part of the Urumqi-Yuli expressway, a vital project designed to link the northern and southern regions of Xinjiang.
Construction of the tunnel began in 2020 and was completed nearly a year and a half ahead of schedule, marking a significant achievement for the country’s infrastructure development. Once operational next year, the tunnel will drastically reduce travel time across the mountainous region, cutting the journey down to just 20 minutes, compared to hours of travel on icy, treacherous roads.
This tunnel is set to bring immense benefits to the region, particularly for truck drivers who regularly navigate these perilous roads carrying essential goods like coal, agricultural products, and livestock. For many years, these winding roads would freeze in the winter, leaving vehicles stranded and disrupting vital supply chains.
The completion of the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel is a testament to China’s growing engineering capabilities and its commitment to improving infrastructure, not only to boost economic development but also to enhance safety and efficiency for those living in and traveling through the region.
