Germany Demands Security Guarantees Ukraine

Berlin Insists Safeguards Statehood Sovereignty

Germany Stresses Security Guarantees for Ukraine After Trump-Putin Talks

BERLIN

Germany on Saturday emphasized that effective security guarantees for Ukraine are essential before any peace agreement with Russia can be reached, following the summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska.

According to the German Press Agency (dpa), citing government sources in Berlin, Ukraine will only consent to a negotiated settlement if it is certain its statehood and sovereignty remain fully protected.

“Nice words are not enough, especially not nice words on the Russian side. What is needed is material, substantial, tangible support,” the sources said.

Europe Aligns on Security Guarantees

A joint statement issued early Saturday by European leaders pledged support for Trump’s peace efforts, while underlining that Ukraine must receive ironclad security guarantees to ensure its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Government insiders confirmed that this EU statement was drafted by Germany, which has been pushing for strong, coordinated backing for Ukraine. Berlin stressed that Europe must maintain unity while working in close partnership with Washington.

“We want to protect our core security interests, but we want to do so in a way that keeps the US in the game,” German officials noted.

Trump-Putin Anchorage Summit

Trump and Putin met in Anchorage late Friday in their first direct talks as sitting presidents in more than four years. The closed-door summit lasted over three hours and was viewed as a potential step toward renewed peace negotiations, though no breakthrough commitments were announced.

Germany’s stance highlights Europe’s determination to ensure Ukraine’s sovereignty remains non-negotiable, while reinforcing transatlantic coordination as the conflict continues.
