Israel Supports Panama in Dispute with China Over Vessel Detentions

Israel Backs Panama Amid Rising Tensions Over Maritime Dispute

Israel Voices Support for Panama

Israel has expressed support for Panama following allegations that China detained ships flying the Panamanian flag. The statement highlights growing international concern over maritime practices and global trade security.

Call for Fair Maritime Enforcement

Foreign Minister Gideon Saar stated that maritime enforcement should remain fair, technical, and free from political influence. He warned that excessive detentions could disrupt global trade, increase costs, and weaken trust between nations.

Furthermore, he stressed that maintaining the rule of law and ensuring freedom of navigation are essential for global stability.

US Raises Allegations Against China

At the same time, the United States has accused China of harassing and detaining vessels registered under Panama’s flag. These claims have added to tensions between the countries and increased scrutiny of shipping routes.

However, China has denied all allegations and rejected claims of misconduct.

Panama Canal Dispute Intensifies

The situation developed after Panama ended its agreement with a Hong Kong-based company that had been managing key ports at both ends of the Panama Canal.

The ports, operated since 1997 by a subsidiary of CK Hutchison, became central to a wider geopolitical dispute. The issue gained further attention after Donald Trump claimed that China had influence over the canal’s operations.

Government Takes Control of Ports

Following a ruling by Panama’s Supreme Court, authorities cancelled the concession agreement with the Hong Kong-based operator. As a result, the government took control of the ports on February 23.

This decision has increased tensions in the region, as major global powers continue to compete for influence over critical trade routes.
