Former US President Donald Trump has announced an additional 10% tariff on all BRICS nations, escalating trade tensions with the China-led bloc amid rising geopolitical rivalry.
The BRICS alliance—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—formed two decades ago, is increasingly viewed as a strategic effort to counterbalance US global dominance. Trump, known for his aggressive trade policies, framed the new tariffs as a necessary step to protect American industries and respond to what he called “unfair trade practices.”
In a statement, Trump said, “BRICS is no longer just an economic group. It’s a political tool led by China to undermine the United States.” The move is expected to impact imports from BRICS nations, ranging from energy and metals to tech components.
Economic analysts warn the tariffs could trigger retaliation and further strain US ties with key global economies. BRICS members have yet to issue a joint response, but China has already condemned the move as protectionist and provocative.
