US President Donald Trump said the Department of Justice and FBI should serve as the main safeguards against abuses involving artificial intelligence, while rejecting broad government regulations on the technology sector.
In an interview with Time magazine, Trump argued that criminal investigations could address harmful AI activity without imposing rules that might restrict technological development or economic growth. He said excessive regulation could damage US technology companies and maintained that businesses should take responsibility for monitoring their own conduct.
Trump also discussed his meeting with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, saying Amodei’s views differed from how they are sometimes portrayed in the media.
Data Center Expansion and Global Competition
Trump called for a major expansion of data centers and computing infrastructure across the United States, warning that communities that reject such facilities could lose potential jobs and economic investment.
He argued that data centers can generate local revenue, create employment and contribute to economic development. Trump also criticized US technology companies for establishing major computing facilities overseas, pointing to a large Google facility in Finland as an example.
The president presented data center capacity as an important issue for US technological and national security interests. He warned that if the United States does not expand its computing infrastructure, other countries, particularly China, could gain an advantage in artificial intelligence and computing capacity.
Trump said the US needs to build sufficient data centers domestically to prevent China from gaining a dominant position in the global AI infrastructure race.
