US Envoy Apologizes for Inappropriate Comment to Lebanese Journalists

ISTANBUL — US Ambassador to Türkiye and Special Envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, admitted that his use of the term “animalistic” to describe Lebanese journalists during a briefing in Beirut was inappropriate. In an interview on Thursday with social media personality Mario Nawfal, Barrack clarified that he did not intend the word to be derogatory but acknowledged his mistake in using it.

During a press conference on Tuesday in Beirut, Barrack, joined by deputy envoy Morgan Ortagus, addressed US efforts to disarm Hezbollah. He reprimanded reporters for asking questions simultaneously, stating, “Please, be quiet for a moment. If this becomes chaotic or animalistic, we will leave.” The remark sparked controversy, prompting Barrack to express regret.

“I used the wrong words,” Barrack said in the interview. “I was asking for calm and civility, but my approach was not right.” He added that he should have been more patient and understanding, noting that the journalists were simply doing their jobs.

Barrack emphasized his regret, stating, “If I could redo it, I would choose different words and show more generosity with my time.”
