Blinken meets Venezuelan opposition before Maduro’s inauguration

Blinken Praises Venezuelan Opposition Ahead of Maduro’s Inauguration

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently voiced his support for Venezuela’s democratic opposition during a call with Edmundo Gonzalez, whom the US recognizes as the “President-elect,” and opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. Blinken lauded their “resilience” in the face of adversity and praised the Venezuelan people’s commitment to democracy.

The call took place against the backdrop of escalating political tensions as President Nicolás Maduro prepares for his January 10 swearing-in for a new term. Despite the Supreme Court declaring Maduro the winner of the July 28 election, the opposition has contested the result, claiming victory. Blinken reaffirmed the US’s commitment to supporting Venezuela’s democratic aspirations and called for the release of all unjustly detained political prisoners, signaling continued international pressure on Maduro’s regime.
