Israel Completes Iron Beam Laser System, First IDF Delivery Set for December 2025
Israel’s Ministry of Defense announced that it has completed the development of the Iron Beam laser defense system, with the first operational capability scheduled for delivery to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on December 30, 2025. Brig. Gen. (Res.) Dr. Daniel Gold, who heads the Defense Ministry’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D), shared the update during the International DefenseTech Summit in Tel Aviv.
Iron Beam Expected to Reshape Battlefield Defense
Dr. Gold explained that the Iron Beam system will significantly change how Israel responds to airborne threats. He noted that the Defense Ministry has finished a full testing program that confirmed the laser’s performance. With development complete, the DDR&D now plans to hand over the system’s first operational capability to the IDF before the end of 2025. He added that the Ministry is already working on next-generation laser technologies.
DefenseTech Landscape Shifts Toward Startup Innovation
During his remarks, Dr. Gold highlighted major changes in the defense-technology sector. Startups, he said, are increasingly competing with large defense companies and securing key contracts. He pointed to a recent DDR&D competition in which several startups won bids to supply the IDF with advanced attack UAV systems.
He emphasized that the Ministry aims to create future “technological surprises” that will support Israel’s security across space, offensive, and defensive fields. According to him, the DDR&D now combines the industrial strength of major defense firms with the agility and creativity shown by startups throughout the current war. This combination, he noted, will drive Israel’s long-term technological edge.
